Do users need to disable floodplain cells, including river channels?

No. No explicit action is required from the user.
The process of disabling floodplain cells, including river channels, is done automatically.

The river channel mesh is always an invalid mesh ([Close] cell).

In the menu > > [Flood simulation] > [Display details] , [Simulation shape display] make sure that the river channel is occupied by invalid cells (cells in black with a cross in a square).

The following figure shows an example of automatic disabling of flood cells in and along the riverbank.
